Apple Surpassed Samsung to Emerge As Top Smartphone Vendor in Q4 2020: Gartner Report

The analysts at Gartner said that the growing availability of and demand for low-end 5G smartphones outside of China will drive smartphone growth in 2021, following a 12.5 percent decline in smartphone sales during 2020.

Apple, for the first time beat Samsung in four years to emerge as the top smartphone vendor in the final quarter of 2020, according to a recent Gartner report. The report says that Apple sold more smartphones than Samsung in Q4 2020, as Apple is selling more iPhones and generating higher profits. During the fourth quarter, Apple had a 20.8 percent market share during the fourth quarter, while Samsung had a 16.2 percent share.

This comes even after Samsung remained the top smartphone brand as of the whole of 2020, its sales fell by 14.6 percent in Q4 2020. In comparison, Apple saw a year-on-year growth of 14.9 percent during the same time. Apple fared well when compared with its competition in the smartphone market. Smartphone sales in the fourth quarter declined to 5.4 percent, according to the market research agency. The reason behind Apple’s success is the strong iPhone 12 sales in the fourth quarter. Gartner said that more consumers chose an iPhone over a Samsung or a OnePlus in the fourth quarter.

Overall smartphone sales in Q4 2020 dipped by 5.4 percent according to the analysts. “Even as consumers remained cautious in their spending and held off on some discretionary purchases, 5G smartphones and pro-camera features encouraged some end users to purchase new smartphones or upgrade their current smartphones in the quarter,” Gartner Senior Research Director Anshul Gupta said in a release.
